A Little about me…

Hey! I’m Alexa Patrick. I am a singer, author, educator, youth-worker, and all-around doer of any creative endeavor that feels good! I am a mission-driven artist who believes that creativity should not just be intentional, but also socially just and joyful.

I grew up in a small Connecticut beach town where I was 1 of only a few Black students, and 1 of a handful of students of color overall. This experience was formative to my artistic voice—often an exploration of Black girlhood in predominantly white spaces and through popular culture references. In addition, this experience taught me a crucial lesson: that everyone’s voice is unique, a strange collection of identities and observations.

3 Stars! 2 Bars!

In 2012, I moved to and fell in love with Washington, D.C.. I started college at American University, majoring in Psychology and minoring in Spanish and African American and African Diaspora Studies. For the first time, I had access to a culturally rich city and I took full advantage of it the only way I knew how—through the arts.

Today, I’ve been able to merge my formal and extra curricula pursuits into one beautiful career, using art as a way to connect, heal, learn, and promote social change. In the 10 years I’ve lived in the DMV, I’ve been honored to partner with like-minded and mission-aligned communities such as Split This Rock, Busboys and Poets, and The Kennedy Center! I have been an Adjunct Professor teaching Spoken Word at The University of the District of Columbia, and am now the Programs Director for Shout Mouse Press. Looking forward, I am excited about all the ways to use art to create a language for myself and teach others to do the same.
